Sometimes we are asked to do projects in memory of loved ones for families that wish to do a lasting tribute to their memory.

The parents of Mr & Mrs Northfield will always be remembered by this project.

Rob and Judy Northfield from North Yorkshire have funded the building of 2 classroom blocks consisting of 5 classrooms in each block. This has proved to be an enormous help at the Sanchaba Sulay Jobe School on the outskirts of Serrekunda. The children were being taught in makeshift tin sheds.

Incorporated in one of these blocks is a computer room where students can learn how to use them. Some of the computers were supplied by Schools for Gambia and also a generator for the electricity supply was given to us by Briggs & Stratton of Winsford Cheshire.

Janets Well
Mr Ray Birch from Mattishall in Norfolk contacted us about doing a project for his late wife Janet, they had been married for 51 years.
We suggested that he might consider doing a clean water Well in her memory , without hesitation Ray agreed to fund this project.
The village of Kunjata where we had recently built a school was chosen for this project.
The Well was done in the school garden and it is known as Janets Well. This Garden has grown in size because they do not have long distances to carry water anymore. It is a very productive garden and all the children now enjoy a good meal everyday with plenty of vitamins, a truly lasting tribute.

Rebbeca’s Garden - Soopanteh Womens Group
These women approached us about starting a womens cooperative garden mainly for women that had been abandoned by there husbands or partners. We would not normally do this sort of thing as one of our projects but there were so many children involved we thought we needed to do something. Joe Keeling who immediately gave us a donation towards this set the fundraising going so we had to do it.
The garden is about 2 hecters and it was all brushwood and had to be cleared, the women set to clear it and by the time we got back to The Gambia 7 weeks later it was done, they worked so hard and some of the children helped as well. After fundraising for this project we were able to fence it and get it animal proof. The next step was to find tools for the garden and all these were supplied by Margaret Mews and all the seeds were from Sutton Seeds in Devon which were a gift.
We then desperately need around 4 Wells for the huge area that this garden covered.
We then had a phone call from Mike Brandish from Norfolk to ask if he could do a project in memory of his daughter Rebecca, as we discussed this the womens garden was mentioned and he said he would like to do the Wells, along with donations from mikes family we were able to do 4 Wells in this garden , the water table in this area was very high so they are not very deep. It has proved to be a very successful and productive project . The garden is known as Rebecca’s Garden and the Wells are called Rebecca’s Wells.

Ruth’s Well
Dave Owens from Norfolk contacted us to ask if we could find a project for him to do in memory of his wife Ruth who passed away five years ago, he had always intended to do something in her memory but did not quite know what.
It was suggested that he might thing about doing a Well at the new school we had finished last year as they had to carry water for a long distance.
We obtained the estimate from the Well Constructer and Dave agreed that he would like to do this project complete with a Hand pump. This was the best thing that has happened to this area as even the villagers have to walk a long way to fetch water. The school will now be able to have a school garden. They are so happy that this is happening. Dave is coming to The Gambia with us later in the year to officially name the Well after Ruth This is another living tribute. Water means life
